The Perfect LFW Outfit

LFW - To The Shows

At nearly five months pregnant I could be forgiven for dreading the extra burden of planning outfits for this season's London Fashion Week. Fashion week outfit planning has never been a task I've delighted in, so many minefields to avoid and so much pressure to look slick without seeming ostentatious, and now this already gruelling task is seemingly more complex than ever before.

In the past I've worn outfits based on one of two values; either comfort or style. Comfort was always the primary choice for days spent hot-footing it between shows and round London meeting up with blogger pals and PRs alike. A focus on style was for days where I could simply arrive at Somerset House, attend one show and retire quickly back to the comfort of my hotel room. Now that I'm pregnant I need to focus on combining these two fashion goals so I can create the perfect outfit for attending LFW.

I've yet to really explore maternity wear and up until recently I was getting by with loose fitting jumpers and dresses, but that's all about to change as my bump has well and truly arrived! Step in Next, whose maternity range was one of the first I came across and which I simply love. Going beyond standard maternity styles that don’t change much season to season, Next have created a range of clothing that incorporate the latest SS14 trends, whilst providing pieces that are both practical and comfortable to wear!

Asked to think about my perfect LFW outfit, I turned to Next.co.uk and teamed up a talented comic artist to demonstrate what I had in mind...

The Dress
A maternity dress that features a striking SS14 print with a simple and structured cut, check! This dress is a huge breath of fresh air from the dull and dowdy maternity dresses I've been looking at up until now. No need to remove all trace of colour from my wardrobe and replace beautiful floral prints with black and navy blue ensembles. This dress provides me with the perfect base to build my ideal LFW outfit around.

The Jacket
It’s never warm enough in February to get away with bare arms and I'm not prepared to risk hypothermia for the sake of fashion (sacrilegious), but a jacket like this provides the ideal mid-season transitional cover-up. The cold temperatures outside are only compounded by the heat generated by the many bodies inside the shows, so a lighter-weight jacket is always the preferable choice over a thick coat as the opportunity to de-layer doesn't happen regularly once you’re squashed in alongside your peers.

The Bag
Describing this outfit as ‘perfect’ allows me to make a very bold handbag choice, instead of the usual gargantuan tote, I've gone for a cute box clutch, with the assumption that given this is a perfect scenario they’ll be an equally cute boy to accompany me carrying all my larger essentials.

The Shoes
Thus far I have avoided any pregnancy-related swelling (famous last words!) and assuming that any future cankles don’t decide to make an appearance before Friday, I fully intend to embrace a pair of (sensible) heels to walk the cobbles of Somerset House. These sharp sandals are ideal to transition any outfit from Winter into Spring and the ankle strap will allow me to walk comfortably and securely, cobbles permitting!
